When studying in New Zealand, students can choose between a number of accomodation options. Students should expect to pay a minimum of NZ$220 per week for accommodation and living expenses. Some possible types of accomodation are below.
HOMESTAY
Students will live with a family in their home, which is great for helping to develop their English. The homestay will provide the student with the own fully furnished room and three meals per day. Students will be treated like one of the family and expected to help out with household chores and abide by the rules set out by their host parents, such as curfews.
Students that wish to look as homestay as an option are encouraged to contact their preferred Avonmore campus in New Zealand (contact can be made via the green ‘Enquire Now’ button) where they will be supplied with relevant local homestay information. Avonmore can offer airport pickups as well as coordinating with your homestay for your arrival in New Zealand.
- A placement fee of NZ$240 applies.
- Price range for homestay varies around New Zealand from $200 to $270 per week.
PRIVATE BOARDING
Students will have their own room in a private residential home or boarding house. Meals are provided, and often shared with other members of the boarding house/accomodation. Students are free to come and go as they please. Students may or may not be expected to help with household chores. Students will usually be expected to care for their own room.\
- Price range from NZ$110-$200 per week and does not usually include electricity, food or internet.
FLATTING
Students can rent a house or apartment (any building where people live together, who are not family or couple, is called a flat). Flats are usually unfurnished. Students will have their own room, or may choose to share with another. The cost of rent is dependent on the size of the room, facilities etc. – all other expenses are divided, and cooking meals and cleaning are usually shared.
- Price range for flatting varies around New Zealand from NZ$180 upwards.
The price depends on the number of people sharing the house or apartment. This figure does not include food, electricity, telephone charges and landlords bond.
ORGANISING ACCOMODATION
Avonmore is not involved in assessing or securing accomodation for tertiary students, however our student liaison teams at all sites will be more the happy to discuss options with the student.
For private boarding and flatting , students should look at the property /rental sections of the daily papers or contact real estate agents. Students may also find websites such as TradeMe useful in securing accomodation options.
