“After completing high school, I decided to enrol at Avonmore and study the Level 5 Computer Technicians course. At this time, I was working part time, doing 18 to 26 hours a week. This made time management to be difficult, but the excellent learning environment at Avonmore allowed me to focus and excel in my studies.
My biggest strengths to learning were reading and taking notes and the way the course was structured helped me grow from virtually zero I.T knowledge to a sound understanding of all the fundamentals.
I’m grateful for the continued support from Avonmore even after I had graduated. One of my Tutors, Liam was persistent in helping me find a job in I.T After arranging a few interviews for me I was sent to Christchurch international airport for a Desktop Support role. I was employed after completing two interviews and some hands on practical tests; during the tests I was able to apply the troubleshooting techniques I had learned at Avonmore to overcome most of the issues presented.
My role is “Support Systems Engineer” and I am learning a vast amount of I.T knowledge every day as I go about my job. The I.T department is very busy, by the end of the first week I was having assistance requests assigned to my personal queue.Learning the fundamentals of I.T is very important, I may not have continued all the way to do Computer Network Systems Engineering (Level 7) but with a sound understanding of Computer Network Engineering (Level 6) I am able to progress and learn in my role.”
