Hairdressing and Retail Level 2

Students who do not meet the academic requirements of the Hairdressing Level 3 programme can apply to start their Hairdressing training with the Hairdressing and Retail Level 2 programme. 

Hairdressing and Retail Level 2 is a great programme to give students a taster of what it might be like to work in the hairdressing and retail industry while still leaving their options open to a multitude of other career options. This course has a mix of interactive, hands -on training, team work, projects and classroom based learning.

The programme is 30 weeks plus holidays.

  • Cash and payment processing
  • Product display
  • Health and safety
  • Hands-on skills
  • Visits to tertiary providers for further education
  • Industry visits
Qualification You Gain
  • New Zealand Certificate in Retail Level 2
  • New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing Level 2

83 credits of this programme can cross credit towards NCEA qualifications. It is the students responsibility to make sure that they are meeting all requirements (including numeracy and literacy) if they wish to simultaneously contribute to other qualifications.

Further Study and Employment

Students will be presented with a range of further study options on the course, including Hairdressing, Beauty and Fashion Design.

Students may also decide to enter employment in the retail sector.

Entry Requirements

Students ideally need to have NCEA Level 1 however may gain entry with some NZQA credits. Entry into all courses is at Avonmore’s discretion.

Students must be aged between 16 and 19 years of age as this is a Youth Guarantee Programme – FREE PROGRAMME. Entry is at Avonmore’s discretion.

Fees & Start Dates


As this is a Youth Guarantee course, those eligible will be able to study for FREE as this is a fully government funded programme, and will receive a travel allowance once they are enrolled to cover a bus fare, to and from course.
