Hairdressing is a vibrant and creative industry that will challenge all. Students learn through a combination of theory and practical training to prepare them for their next step into apprenticeship based training. Students who meet academic requirements can start their hairdressing careers with this programme.


The Hairdressing Salon Support course is a 34 week programme designed to learn those core salon skills you need to get kick started in the Hairdressing Industry. Learn about everything from shampooing to customer service, client care to recommending hair product, displaying product in the salon, first aid and safety, environmental factors in the salon and more.

Students between the ages of 16 and 19 under who have not achieved NCEA Level 3 (some conditions apply) will be eligible to apply for Youth Guarantee (FREE training). Students must attend an information session at Avonmore with a parent (if under 18) and meet all relevant criteria. Entry is at Avonmore’s discretion.

Youth Guarantee programmes are a Government funded programme that pays the course fees, course related costs and a travel allowance to get to and from course on behalf of the student (for further information please contact Avonmore).

What You Will Learn

All students are required to start some regular paid or unpaid work experience in a salon from the start of the course (Minimum 6 hours per week). It is an important part of meeting industry professionals, learning about the industry and building up a student’s skill level in the salon.

On completion of Year One Salon Fundamentals you will gain:

New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) Level 3

Further Study & Employment

Avonmore students can continue to study with Avonmore and enter our Year Two hairdressing programme where students spend time predominantly developing their cutting and colouring skills. You can find further information about this course here.

If you wish to enter the industry at this point under apprenticeship. It is highly recommended that you speak to Avonmore tutors about the different options for you and what will be best suited to your needs. They can help and guide you regarding the best salons to train with.

Entry Requirements

Those wishing to apply for Hairdressing need to apply through attending an information session at Avonmore. Any work experience or participation in a prior hairdressing programme will help a student’s application to the programme.

Students need to have gained NCEA Level 2 or equivalent ideally and need to be a minimum of 16 years old. Some exceptions are made so if you think you have what it takes please feel free to book an information session on 0800 4 AVONMORE.

Acceptance into the Hairdressing programme is at Avonmore’s discretion.

Course Related Costs: $499

Youth Guarantee students: Fees, course related costs and a travel allowance are paid by the Government on the student’s behalf.

Eligible students are aged between 16 and 19 years of age and don’t have a qualification higher than NCEA Level2. Some other conditions apply. Please contact us for further information regarding Youth Guarantee if required.
